House Manual & Link Love: Housekeeping Helpers

As much as I love technology (I blame my first Palm Pilot! it was The.Most.Incredible.Thing.EVAH!!!!) I'm finding good ole fashioned lists are doing more to keep me organized that ever before. I've been making use of a few free downloadable lists and thought I would I share.

Check out this post on DesignFinch.com - Sunday Planning She's got a nifty collection of Daily Planners, Menu Planners, Weekly Planners and Blog Planners. I'm using three of these right now :)

Ok. I am so not a Christian. And I pretty much roll my eyes at some supposedly "devout" folks... however... I have to give some serious credit to this chick at 31 Days To Clean! This 31 Cleaning Plan is really cool. Ignore the Christian stuff (or not, your choice!) and print out a copy of the calendar. As a hoarder I either see the big picture and get overwhelmed; or only see the small details and ignore the rest. This plan is actually helping me to Get Stuff Done.

I've instituted a plan where I was the dishes I've just used, wipe down the sink, make the bed when I get up, pick up whatever I just put down, etc. This is great for the current messes but then I see the sheer number of things that need to be cleaned and handled - and I panic.

Using the calendar is helping me to work through one extra chore a day. Seeing my refrigerator sparkling clean and organized so inspired me to keep going. Now life does occasionally get in the way. If I'm unable to do that days chore I just pick up where I left off.

I've added the above calendar and list to my "House Manual". I've been taken with the idea of creating a manual for my home. Riffing off the house manuals that Leather Families use I thought, "Why not do one for my home?" While my manual may not be so specific as to behaviors and actions it can represent the ideals that I like to espouse and strive to live toward. I've added the below sentiments to my House Manual.

I'm deep in the Great Purge of 2011! Woohoo!

I went through approximately 3/4 of my outdoor shed. I threw away so much stuff! It was awesome!!! I moved my camping gear into the shed, and will be moving lawn mower & other yard stuff in shortly. I will also be moving my show displays and luggage in there. It will still be very accessible but not under foot.

My "theme" for the new sewing room is "corsets"! I can decorate and practice setting grommets at the same time :)

Memorial Day decorating inspiration

Work is having a Memorial Day contest - the department that wins the decorating contest gets a VIP Ice Cream Social. I'd love for my team to win something like that so I've decided to kick-butt and create some awesome decorations!

My idea is to take vintage military pictures (preferably family members) and postcards, surround with pleated cupcake wrappers to simulate bunting, and hang from the cubical dividers, with crepe paper streamers.

New Assemblage for 30 Days of Creativity

Take one nice, sturdy wooden box and cover with gesso. Actually first I had to scrape off the various stickers & pogs some young person had decorated it with, then I used the gesso. This is mostly to provide a surface for more paint and paper.

I love alcohol inks! I originally bought them to use on my skulls to simulate moss and fungi but find myself reaching for them more and more. Here they add some background color and texture.

I was inspired by "pretty little mini quilts" published by Lark Books.

There are a couple designs in the book I want to try next: "have a cup" designed by Mary Hubbard and "shrine to pretty little things" designed by Janie Fingal. I've got so many bits and pieces of fabrics horded plus my stash of vintage table linens & doilies should keep me busy for awhile.

The other book to really spark my creative jones "Mixed-Media Dollhouses" by Tally Oliveau and Julie Molina. These are just so cool!!! I have bunches of containers and miniatures I've collected over the years that are stuck away in storage. This idea seems like the perfect way to blend both. I went on a Re-Ment bing a few years ago and have some adorable miniatures of varying scales. Plus I have a big box of old German dollhouse furniture that needs to see the light of day.

I'm so happy with the way this turned out!

It's approximately 13"x18" of cotton fabric (mostly those fat quarter and charm packs that JoAnn Fabric's sell), bamboo batting, and various stitches on my machine. The leaf shapes are double stuffed and free-hand stitched on the machine for a trapunto effect.

Earlier this morning I spent several delicious hours reading various blogs that focused on doll houses and miniatures. When I was younger I was a pretty serious miniaturist. I even made a working loom following life size directions in one of the Foxfire books. I loved the itty-bitty stuff. So I got the fancy to build a doll house kit.

As I was looked up kits I came across this: Greenleaf Miniature Travel Trailer! How adorable! It sparked the idea of doing one for my Mom since she loves the old 'canned ham' and Airstream styles.

Later I was browsing the magazines at Barnes & Noble when I spotted the corner of a 'Miniature Collector' magazine peaking out behind a knitting magazine. As I haven't looked at one in years I pulled it out of the rack. And this was the cover...

Ok... I think I'm supposed to make a tiny travel trailer this summer. I'm good with that :)

PreHeat - Trapunto

I want to get this down before I lose it. Idea - trapunto pendants for PreHeat swag. Use fabric book samples, smidge of stuffing, multicolor thread around 'swirl&sparks' logo with 2010 stitched on. Maybe a sprinkle of beads? String on lanyard cording, I think I have some glow-in-the-dark still. Maybe add a drop bead (mom's clay beads might just be perfect!)

Now, back to chores so I can play later :)

Apron tutorial

Tonight I finished up the apron for my Steampunk costume. Go me! This time I had the forethought to take pics along the way so I could post a tutorial of sorts.

I started with some beautiful fabric I've had for ages. It's a crinkle cotton woven with richly colored stripes. I started kinda backwards as I draped the pleating first, then figured out the base shape.

Luckily the width was fine for me so I didn't need to piece lengths together. I tossed the fabric over my dress form and began to play...err... drape the pleats.

Once I had the pleating to my satisfaction I roughed out the base shape, again using the dress form to check curves and fit. From there I cut the base shape out of mid-weight satin and ironed on the interfacing.

I basted the pleated fabric to the base wrong-sides together. I decided to not do it right-sides together because of the bulk. I would have nearly 6 to 8 layers at some points if I did due to the pleating. I'll bind the raw edges when done. To keep my pleating secure I folded up and away each pleat...

...and stitched it at the base through all the layers. Only the very bottom layer of fashion fabric is stitched down, leaving the folds to drape naturally.

I basted around the raw edges and then trimmed up with my rotary cutter.

I missed pics of pinning the bias tape around the bottom :[ To spiff the plain black bias tape, and to secure down over the multiple layers, I decided to use one of my machines decorative stitches. I found a repeating scallop that was similar to the wide gold stripe pattern. I used rayon embroidery thread that also matched the gold stripe. The waistband is finished with satin blanket binding. I did not use a decorative stitch here, but I may go back and add one.

Post Holiday Sigh of Relief

I didn't blog much during the month of December due to working 6 days a week, and because my projects were presents for family. Didn't want to give away the surprise :)

Naturally I didn't manage to get pictures of them before I wrapped them up LOL

I bought nice 'beefy' tee shirts for the guys, then embroidered a different design on each one. Step-dad's had a color crab, Cousin's-husband's was a multi-colored Asian dragon, and Teen-cousin's was steampunk wings (Urban Threads).

Gals on my list got funky, patchwork, shabby-chic purses based off The Jenny Bag Tutorial. Again, each purse was embroidered with at least two different designs. My Mom got crabs and palm trees, Cousin's had Asian dragons, and Little-Cousin wild paisley and flowers.

I'm really happy with how they turned out! I may make up some more to have for ready gifts.

Next big project is an urban-style kilt using the X-Kilt Tutorial. As I told my boyfriend Doug, "I don't know if you even want one, but your getting one" LOL

Oh Lucy! You Gotta Lotta 'Splainin To Do

I honestly didn't realize I had not updated since September!!! Yikes!!!

The biggest reason is my full time. I applied, interviewed, and was granted a seasonal promotion. In theory it's only for the holiday season and I may go back to my regular position end of December or in January. But I'm usually happy and excited about the job, but come home utterly exhausted. And starting next week we start working 6 days a week.

So no crafty bitch time :(

However, today I plan on embracing the Muse to start working on holiday presents! I've downloaded some fun embroidery patterns and plan to rifle through my stash for fabrics to match.

I may even go so far to get pics up of the few bits & bobs I've got in the works currently. Hats, book cover, blouse...

I finally sit down to update my Izoralee Blog... and Blogger is having major issues. Won't save or publish, and generates random error codes. Everyone is having the same error but all are getting unique codes. Sounds fucked up to me. I've c&p'd my post below so I can copy over when Blogger finally is fixed. Arrggghhh.

Getting Over My Fears
Rather getting over being intimidated by the embroidery machine! I've figured out how to sew regular stitches, fill the bobbin, thread the machine, how to use the pre-programed fancy stitches, and how to set it up for embroidery.

Yesterday I stitched a one color decorative design, then managed a FIVE! color pattern. I think I may invest in one of those thread stands that sit behind your machine and hold several spools of thread at once.

Yesterday I also downloaded a bunch of free designs thus leading to my next set of challenges. The first being how to use the ATA PC card! Took me a bit but I figure out how to pull up the stored files.

It wasn't until this morning when I went to unzip the new freebie files that I realized they were in the wrong file format. A quick Google search and I have a freeware program that will convert the different machine formats. Woot!

My sweetie Doug is coming over this afternoon to watch 'Westworld' (can't believe he hasn't seen this fabulous early 70's Michael Crichton staring Yul Brynner, Richard Benjamin, and James Brolin! it's the cheesiest!) so I'm putting my aside my shiny new toy to tidy up house and myself.

After his visit I'll probably play with the machine some more. I think I want to try embroidering on a piece of chiffon, with the appropriate stabilizer. Creating 'appliques' may be the best way to get designs onto the hats. But I won't know until I've tried both ways.

Off to be domestic :)

Last week I received my millinery kit from JudithM but today is the first day I've had to start making something. I'm using the book that came with the kit and the classic 'From The Neck Up' to create a boater style hat.

So far I've drafted the pattern, and cut it out of buckram. I originally made the brim 3" all the way around but then adjusted that to suggested mesurements from the kit book. I'm afraid the new brim might be a bit narrow for my taste but I'm reserving judgement until it's completed.

I've wired the tip and the inner brim. I'll wire the brim edge when I get home from work. Then start covering it with fabric.

I went on a cleaning and organizational binge Sunday and Monday. I made a lot of improvements to my studio room. One of the perks of having re-organized is re-discovering a bunch of deeply colored feathers. I had used them several years ago on some holiday ornaments. These will come so in-handy!

Work is pretty slow tonight so I may be home earlier than normal. I'll decide on sleep or hats then :)

Steampunk Costume #1 - The basics

Recently I was gifted two big garbage bags full of clothing. The Fabulous Gift-er had lost some weight and no longer fit into them. I was delighted to take them off her hands. In going through and selected what I wanted I came across three items that individually didn't strike me, but when I glimpsed them laying together in a pile - Inspiration Hit!

I realized the three separates were perfect, with a little tweaking, for a great Steampunk costume. And really, who amongst us can't be improved with a little tweaking? ;)

Sadly, I've mis-placed my camera so shoddy camera phone pics will have to suffice for now.

The basic blouse and skirt:

The blouse is a 100% cotton, white, princess cut with short sleeves. Shaping is very important especially when boobalicious like myself. I originally thought to tea dye it but decide to keep it white for now. I can always dye it once if it gets stained. I plan on using button covers to cover up the plain buttons with steamy bits of beads & gears.

The skirt is also cotton in the quasi-military style. I hate elastic waists but I can deal with it. I may add bits of old cotton lace scavenged from linen napkins to the pockets for just a touch of femininity. You can't tell from this picture but it's mid-calf length and A-line in shape. Kinda reminds me of the stuff Banana Republic put out in the day.

Ahh, the stodgy, grandmother-ly cardigan. Soon to be a sexy steamy cover-up! I have two ideas for this piece. One idea is to re-sew the front so it is more fitted and shape the back to almost a bustle. The second idea is add a ribbon along the top of the lacy part and use that to draw up to the waistline. Maybe to add some additional lace. I can see wearing this over a sexy bra :D

Success and Setback

Gosh darn it! I was feeling pretty good about the hat project. Trust me, I've stitched, picked out, and re-stitched it a couple of time, but it's been a steady forward movement. so I've been riding that wave as I diverted my attention to adding LEDs to my friend's Burning Man costume.

I'm adding LEDs to the wedding dress that I previously added el-wire on to. I tried out the soft circuit pattern. Worked on the first try. I start stitching on the dress... nada zip zilch. Phooey! It's either the soft battery pocket or I'm goofing up the stitching pattern. I've stitched one circuit of five LEDs three times now with no success.

I'm going to try using the hard battery holder. Hopefully I can figure out a way to attach it.

Funny how much I'm getting done now that I no longer have cable! I love me some tv but it's saving me money and giving me more time by not having it currently. Smart move on my part, I think :)

I've solidified my Steampunk costume and persona. I'm thinking she's a bawdy, rowdy, flirty, itinerant dancer providing entertainment & bit of respite for the hardworking airship mechanics and scientists. Why nothing like me at all, huh? ::evil laugh::

The basic clothing choices will be a Ghawazee coat over harem pants or ruffly bloomers. I'm going to use Madame X's Adjustable Ghawazee Coat & Turkish Vest pattern. I can see using grommets, eyelets, washers, d-rings, and assorted hardware for the loops, with keys and compasses hanging from the lace ends. I could even wear a dainty lace blouse under it for a bit more modesty and decorum. I've come up with a design idea for the bloomers that are basically split open up the sides almost to hip line and then lined with increasing width ruffles. The appearance, standing still, would be of a skirt with the sides tucked up, like we did with our big flying skirts.

Not sure yet what fabric I want for the top yet. I'm thinking a white & color stripe for the bloomers and ruffles. I do know I want to make a 'night' or 'performance' version of this. The coat would be cut under the bust line, and sheer, sparkly black. Sparkly bra with gears & brass. The bloomers would be dark dark burgundy red. I'm thinking Steam-Theda Bara.

Footwear is a stumper. Probably sturdy comfortable ankle boots for day. Or maybe even my old bellydance ghillies. I wonder if I could add embellishments to them? I'll have to keep an eye out for appropriate shoes or boots.

It's a start, and I'm looking forward to seeing how it evolves.

I had a bit too much caffeine so to burn it off I fiddled with a new chain maile technique. I think this bracelet is really cute! Mobius balls linked by black rubber rings and smaller colored rings. Very light weight. I added a magnetic clasp but could easily add another link or two, then just stretch it on & off.

I finished the second pocket for my steampunk-ish pocket belt idea. This pocket is a panel that sits on the left hip and has two smaller pockets plus loops to hang things. I have not added the D-rings yet to this mock-up.

I noticed two construction flaws that are easily fixed when I go make the final version. The first is the placement of the belt loops. They need to be moved to the outside edge. That will remove that annoying 'flap'.

The second flaw is from the larger sub-pocket pulling the bottom edge upward. I should aligned the top & sides before stitching the bottom.

This is only a mockup but I'm kinda digging it. To make more functional I'm going to add the D-rings, and add some black lace appliques to tie in with the black elastic loops & stitching. I'm also thinking of ripping out the top line of stitching, add a lining & install a zipper - TaDah! nifty little purse!

For the final costume piece I may make the panel bigger overall; a very defined curve along the bottom edge; two piece grommets; possibly more grommets as design feature.

I definitely need to add a third pocket to balance the belt. That I'll hold off on until I've made myself a Ray Gun so it will custom fit in the back.

Construction Notes - Pocket1

2) Make pattern for Loops, cut fabric & interfacing
3) Turn Loops 5/8 and top stitch twice
4) Mark placement and stitch Loops to Back2, zigzag for stability
5) Stitch Bottom to outward facing Back1, right sides facing up
6) Leave 5/8 open on ends of seam
7) Stitch Front to Bottom1 around curve, starting and stopping at the previous 5/8 mark
8) Turn under and stitch top edge of Front
9) Stitch Front to Back1 with right sides facing same direction (ie: raw seams)
10)Carefully sandwich Back1 and Back2, right sides together (with Front & Bottom out of stitching lines

necklace re-do update

I forgot to take a picture of the necklace before I cut it apart. ::Doh!:: But I've only removed a few elements so I figured this was decent documentation of it's "Before" status.

I figured out how to move the knots up snug to the spacer beads. I think this is the look I want.

I originally used Fireline on the beaded panels but I don't like the way the tension has settled. Some are quite wonky and not as fluid a feel as I wanted. I'm going to redo each beaded panel but use either Nymo or C-lon beading thread in dark green. I want more of a drape than a stiff panel.

I'm re-doing an existing necklace. It was an Egyptian inspired piece made up of three layers of beaded panels. I've never been happy with the way it hung so I decided to re-do it.

These are my notes on the new improved design. I'm using 'Celtic Knots for Beaded Jewelry' by Suzen Millodot, as reference for my knotwork.

re-stitch all the panels; do each separately so as not to lose beads, nor shift colors

braid knot between each panel

one silver spacer on each side of braid knots

Peyote Progress Pics

I thought I post a comparison pic of the peyote rectangles I'm working on from the "Shaped Beadwork" book.

The first rectangle is a single layer with two colors. I found that using two colors really helped me to understand the corners. Basically it's a 1-3-2-2-1 pattern for corners.

The second rectangle is a layered rectangle in progress. I'm using a solid color for the back. Mostly to save my eyesight! The tiny silver lined beads are tough to distinguish especially on the corners. Using Diane Fitzgerald's technique you start the second layer from the inside and work yourself outward. Then zip the layers together at the outside edge.

Third rectangle is a completed double layer. I like the substantial look that two layers give without any actual bulk or added weight. They look less flimsy and more complete, a quality item.

My plan is to practice on triangles next and use those in conjunction with the rectangles in a neck piece :)

Book Review "Shaped Beadwork"

I am working my way through Diane Fitzgerald's 'Shaped Beadwork: dimensional jewelry with peyote stitch'. I've been admiring various artists' use of three dimensional beadwork for some time. I've never attempted it because I've never been too comfortable with peyote stitch. It's never come out neatly for me, always a bit ragged and rough looking.

Not anymore!

I'm starting at the front and practicing the basics. By following her examples I'm setting the stage to get more dimensional. I'm already adding layers!

I'm finding the directions clear and the illustrations fairly good. This is a labeled as a 'beadweaving master class', and you need to have a good understanding of the basic peyote technique.

I haven't tackled any of the detailed pieces, like the Pouff Bead, yet but I'll follow up with another review when I do.

I turn in my final pieces for my 2D Design class on Thursday. Then my Tuesdays and Thursdays will be free to bead again! Woot!

I've added Twitter Updates to my sidebar. Keeps me from writing everything out multiple times plus serves as a 'tickler file' for subjects I'd like to expand on here. So many times I've thought of something I want to blog about but then forget when I finally have the time. This way I can Twitter via cellphone when the idea strikes. Ahh technology!

I finished up the necklace using the Norse Goddess beads bought previously on Ebay. I have got to get pics tomorrow. I've really fallen in love with this particular necklace. It might just be mine :)

In prep for FridayFest I finished up three necklaces. Mostly stringing beaded focals on ribbon, adding clasps, etc. Plus two of my stretchy chain bracelets had cured enough for me to snip off the excess elastic. I've found that liberally coating the knots with Jeweler's Cement and letting cure/dry for several days really seals the knot.

I'm trying to decide what to work on next. I'm pretty happy with the new stuff for Friday so not feeling under the gun but I do want much more stock on hand. Goodness knows I've got enough beads in the house.

I have got to re-organize the studio room. Ok, confession time - I have got to CLEAN the studio room. I know I have a box of ribbons and cording somewhere. Somewhere. Can't find it to save my life. I've tucked them away somewhere 'safe'. Or a pile of papers/beads/books/fabric/tools/clothing/misc has slid over on top of them. I need my workspace for some of the upcoming art class homework plus I just need to reclaim my studio. I'm going to try to work in small spurts of separating and organization with everything else going, with an eye toward final finish during my Spring Break. I can get help then to move the furniture and lay the floor tile, then shift everything back.

Friday The 13th - My Lucky Day!

Friday the 13th usually go pretty well for me and this past one was no exception.

The most fantabulous to happen was my tax refund was deposited - yea for money!!!

Some of the money was earmarked for booth display improvements. Last night I bought a couple of new black&white display pieces of Ebay. I need more necklace displays since my stuff looks better hanging as if worn rather than just dangling from a rod. I've also made quite a few rings and they just don't get displayed properly on the hands I currently have, so ring displays are also on their way. I had thought about investing in a new folding table, one a bit higher. However last night we were next to some gals with a great idea - they put their regular folding table up on bed risers! I use bed risers on my bed here at home but never ever thought about using them on my table! Doh! So today I'm pricing wooden block bed risers. I also need to stop by local beadstore for some 6lb Fireline.

Last night I vending at the monthly street fair, FridayFest. Beautiful weather! We hardly broke a sweat setting up but was comfortable in my 3/4 sleeve t-shirt and capris through out the night. Only sold two things but made my vending fee plus so I'm ok with it.

I really need to get on the ball and finish the new pieces that are in works. Plus I need to plan more for upcoming seasons and holidays. I should have had some heart jewelry out for Valentines. I need to get my Halloween and Christmas stuff done sooner, etc.

I'll be vending at an upcoming bellydance show in April so really need some new pieces for then. My plan is start working on the various focal beads and pendants I've been accumulating. I have enough to supply me for the upcoming year LOL

Ok, I think I'm going insane. Just last week or so I used a tutorial in a recent bead magazine to learn how to use the right-angle-weave (aka RAW) like building blocks. Basically it is create a double layer of beads. The little 'bead blocks' can be manipulated and used to create all sorts of 3 dimensional shape.

There is a term for this particular technique.

But since I can't find the damn magazine I don't know what it is! AAARRRGGGG!

I wanted to document the magazine tutorial but nooooo. Hmmphhh.

Anyways I'm playing with the technique, working on an angular celtic knot design. A couple of things I've learned:

Use 4lb Fireline since you'll be going through each bead many times.
Stitch each RAW element at least twice, it needs the stability.
When starting on the second layer, begin on an interior row. For some reason the pattern comes out neater when I begin in the middle and work outwards.

Welcome Home 2009! I'm looking forward to what you bring :)

I was offered a permanent position! Woot! the work itself is not ideal but it's steady money, eventually insurance, and my schedule will allow for going back to school, plus an occasional art show/vending event.
Taking classes at BCC. This semester it's only one art class but it will get me back in the groove. Potentially I could have my Graphic Design degree in slightly more than a year.
I'm looking forward to making some new jewelry and slightly re-vamping my business plan.

I started working on these last week. Glass slides, copper tape,
origami paper, rub on letters, sticker letters, tiny brass watch
parts, tiny crystal rhinestone. I used Diamond Glaze to embed the tiny gears and rhinestone on the small pendant.

I was at Hobby Town earlier today for brass wire. I wandered through their model section and noticed the tiny figures and landscaping elements. I have an idea for doing tiny 3-dimensional "specimen cases". Maybe use some of the Rement items I have... Oooo little display case necklaces with microscopic dioramas!

LOL I've been trying to work bigger but I keep getting drawn back to the itty-bitty scale LOL

Another "Meh" show

The weather was fine, our drive up was great, the hotel was nice, and we found excellent Irish pub food. Nom nom nom scotch eggs! I sold 4 bracelets from my lower price point on Saturday. Sunday was nothing but "Wow! what beautiful stuff! and great prices! Ok, bye!". :: heavy sigh:: It was one of those events where no one was buying. The only bags you saw folks carrying were filled with tomatoes and cukes from a veggie merchant around the corner. One of the food vendors told me that folks were doing the same to them - they would compliment the menu options, comment how good everything smelled, and then keep walking.

Oh well. I'll get the website finished up. I also need to work on more pieces for Friday Fest and Florida Pagan Gathering.

OH! I had someone ask me to come vend at their event! I think I'm at Utopia that weekend but I pleased to be asked.

Successful Friday Fest

Last night I vended for the first time at FridayFest in Melbourne, FL. I usually go to FridayFest as an attendee. I enjoy strolling the street, checking out the vendors, listening to the band, then hanging out with the drummers and bellydancers.

It was a big different be a vendor. For one, I couldn't explore as usual but I was fine with that. The organizers were kind enough to put me down by the drummers so I was the first tent in the row. I got a lot of very positive feedback. Many people asking if I was local, did I have shop, where do I sell at, and most importantly - would I be back next month? Obviously I will LOL

About halfway through the evening a gentleman approached my table. He stuck out his hand and said "I've been talking about you all evening". I know my eyes got big and eyebrows shot up LOL Turns out he was one of the organizers and was working a mic & pa system further down the street. Since this was my first FridayFest he was talking up my stuff on the mic! How cool!

OH! and I sold a couple of my higher price point pieces!

So did I just kill or increase a few brain cells getting the shipping options setup in ZenCart? It has taken me the greater part of the evening to set the shipping costs as I wish. Thank Goddess I'm doing this locally install of a live install LOL I love being able to change - test - change - test with no consequences.

More Baby Steps

In addition to some TS Fay cleanup I finally got a good local install of Zen Cart! Nothing wrong with the program, I just had computer issues last time I tried. This time it was just cake! Apache installed, MySQL installed, MercuryMail installed. Thunderbird is setup with the test emails. I changed my host from GoDaddy over to BlueHost. It should propagate by tomorrow but I'm taking my time, setting up a dummy/local store so I can learn how Zen Cart actually works. I want to have complete control over my store.

Gonna fix myself a tall glass of cold milky chai then get back to it :)

Upside of Tropical Storm Fay

There was an upside of Tropical Storm Fay. Being stuck inside while we got hit with nearly 30 inches rain resulted in two nearly complete beaded projects.

The first is a beaded necklace using a cool lampwork bead I picked up several years ago at a local gem & mineral show. To me the bead looks like a Chinese dragon is trapped inside.

I'm going to string these on a shimmery metallic ribbon, maybe a light purple or pale gold.

The second project doesn't look like much yet LOL

I'm using a broken fragment from either a crystal wineglass or a crystal candlestick as a base. I started with peyote stitch then right-angle-weave when I increased bead size. I have a vague idea of what I'd like but just kinda going free-form with for now. An interesting departure from jewelry :)

Book Recommendation

I read a recommendation on Craftster.org for "Be Your Own Boss: Small Time Business Operator" by Bernard B. Kamoroff. It was the subtitle, however, that grabbed my attention, 'How to start your own business, keep your books, pay your taxes and stay out of trouble' LOL!

I had questions on exactly how to handle paying for expenses from both my personal and business account, and what I should be documenting, etc. This book answered all my questions! The table of contents and chapters are clearly labeled so you can skip straight to the necessary sections. The language is straightforward and simple. Terms are defined and examples given. Spreadsheets are in the back of the book too.

Thanks to this book I've set up my checkbook in Microsoft Office Accounting, and used Excel to create a Monthly Income Ledger and Expenditure Ledger. Come month-end and year-end I'll be pulling it off the shelf again :)

I'm still lethargic and meh but shaking it off. Part of my 'meh' is procrastination in doing biz admin stuff. I did manage to take a shower, get dressed, and meander down to B&N. I read a good recommendation on a small business operations book and decided to buy it. I've got MS Accounting for Small Business but had some questions on other record keeping.

So this week's tasks are: getting more familiar with record keeping; learning how to put the EZ-Up so I can get pics; brainstorming costume with Kat; work on ZenCart set up.

Afterthoughts

I had a good safe trip home. Traffic was not bad at all and we made good time. I dragged my suitcase in the front door about 9pm. Of course all the rest of my stuff is still in the car LOL
Changed immediately into a comfy nightie and relaxed for the evening. I love my bed :)

The positives:

I received many compliments on my display.
I received many compliments on my work.
Not one dreaded "I can do that".
I sold 6 pieces.
No one blinked at my prices.
I have enough pieces to use at my next show, less to replace.
I know now to make some matching or coordinating earrings and rings.
I have time to focus on some planned arty pieces.
Follow up administrative tasks will be easy this time around.

The negatives:

It was a slow vending event overall. Some just broke even, some sold nothing at all.
Poor initial impression of the event due to uninformed staff.
Never laid eyes on the Vendor Coordinator the entire event, couldn't pick her out of a line up.

So overall - not bad. I've got a show under my belt. I have another event already scheduled and I'm prepared to pick up a few more.

Quick update before I head down to vend

James and I had real treat last evening. We decided at the last minute to head over to the Cuban Club for Voltaire's, http://www.voltaire.net/, off-site performance. The fashion show was still going on so we mingled in the lobby and he noticed that Voltaire was selling his cds off to the side. We bought the newest one and paid in cash. As Voltaire was signing it for me he told us a story. Basically he caught a cab to the airport and then realized he only had $6 and no wallet. His girlfriend had the cab come back so she could pay him and V managed to get on the plane with just his passport. He found enough change to buy a bottle of water and a cup of coffee in his backpack. Luckily someone from the con was picking him up in Miami and bringing him to Tampa. The point of the story was that the $15 dollars I handed him was literally the only cash he had on him and he was thanking us cause now he wasn't 'penniless'! Dunno if it was true or not but hilarious to hear him tell it! ROFLMAO!

Before I forget - ohmygawd, our dinner last night! We went out intending to have Quiznos or Subway, which was just a block away from the hotel. We ended up in this gourmet meal instead for maybe $15 each. James had a roasted pear, bacon and blue cheese salad, while I had a duck & brie crepe on a slice of grilled pineapple. Yes. You read that right. We treated it like tapas and shared. I think we just stopped ourselves from licking the plates clean. Nom Nom Nom!

The trip over to Tampa went well. A little behind schedule but it's not like we were on a deadline LOL James' photoshoot went well. He got a couple of awesome shots. I enjoyed downtime by the pool, flipping thru a 'Bead and Button' magazine, brainstorming some new pieces. After the shoot a few of us went out to dinner in Ybor City. Nom nom nom :)

The event is going exactly as planned but I'm rolling with the punches. I must have looked at last year's schedule and thought it would be duplicated this year. This year vending is only two days (Saturday & Sunday) and from Noon - 5pm. This is really odd for any event I have ever been to but hey, roll with it. Load-in is Friday afternoon and we're planning on getting booth & product shots.

Tomorrow morning we're walking a couple of blocks to a French restaurant for crepes! Rawr!

Finished photographing all the pieces I'm taking with me to C14. I was only taking quickie pics to document for my database but dang, 50+pcs! whew!

Got my table drape cut and the raw edges serged.

All show stuff packed up!

Really all that is left is to decide what I'm taking in regards to clothing and makeup :)

I have a pair of earrings I'd love to finish but not sure if it will happen. They may end up going with me as 'booth work'. Plus I received some Swarovski rivolis today from Artbeads.com that are destined for earrings too.

Hmmm... adds "put together box of beads & tools to take to C14" to my to-do list :)

So much for my bright idea to paint henna patterns on my display arm. The paint pen I was using was just too thick, the paint too light (I wanted subtle but invisible is ridiculous), and my hands just shake too much.

Ahh well, a quick coat of spray paint and the evidence will be hidden LOL

I may find a local henna artist and have them paint on a design then clear coat.

Yup, I think that is a plan.

More Purging!

More purging of the good kind! Mom just left with my old computer desk, a free standing sewing notion holder thingy, and a huge plastic tub of... stuff! I can't believe how much of a difference it made - there is more floor! open space! airy-ier! I can see what is left better too. Some of it she'll sale on Ebay, some will get sold in an upcoming yard sale.

I showed off all the elements I've been pulling together for C14. She loved it. Yes, she's my mom and she's gonna support nearly everything I do but it feels good to get some validation for my work. To have someone else see the same vision and think it's on track - well, it feels good. I've got all the jewelry entered into the database. I'm going with over 50 pieces. I showed her everything too and she thought it was enough too. Whew!

All that is left is: cut & serge the table drape; buy table cloth; put pinback onto Spider Broach, paint henna-like designs onto display arm; pack it all up!

I ordered a couple cute tops & a dress from www.alight.com. They should be here today and hopefully fit. When they arrive I'll start pulling together outfits and packing my personal stuff. Tuesday I have a hair appointment to spiff up my layers. I may re-red it before I have it cut. If not before then immediately after so the smell is gone by Thursday.

Just got back from errands. I'm still bouncing from her praise, "Wow, you've really got this all together"! This coupled with some comments I've recently received from folks on my work is just making me glow :D Ok, tablecloth, clips & table skirt is bought. Found a funky placemat at Target that will coordinate with my table drape too.

Gonna scarf down some lunch and paint an arm LOL

I finished up 9 rings, 1 ring&earring set, and 2 pairs of earrings. Still to go is: finished red&black bracelet, finished green&brown spiral tube necklace, string green&black beaded bead, remove necklace part from spider piece and add pin back. I have a couple other pieces that I'm mulling over either re-doing or re-working all together. By that I mean, either redo them just as they are but better, or rework to make a completely different item. They are not a priority right now but I'll get 'em eventually :)

I heart Big Lots

I went to Big Lots with the intention of buying one box of snack size plastic bags. They are perfect for storing jewelry pieces in. I walked out with not only the bag of snack bags but a cool metal frame mirror, a wooden tray from which necklaces & bracelets can hang off of, and metal easels for both!

Only 18 days until I head to Tampa for C14!!! I'm nervous and excited but nearly ready :)

Today I worked through a pile of unfinished necklaces. I finished 8 necklaces! Woot! I have one that is still unfinished because I need more Crystal Fireline, and two that I'm just not happy with. I'm not sure if they need to be re-worked or re-done completely. I'll look at them later with fresh eyes.

I'm going to make some more necklace displays this week. I found these two cool tutorials that I'm going to try out:

I'm also going to start pulling together a 'show box'. I've found several good lists online plus I remember some of what my bosses took when I worked at the jewelry manufacturer.

LOL I know, I know! Its been ages since I've updated, but I can either create or blog. And sometimes creating wins :)

Looking forward to CON14, http://www.c14ybor.com/, in August 2008. I'm finishing up some gorgeous decorated bra's. I've got a few display props on order, hopefully they will arrive this week. I need to lay out my wares and start planning my display. See what I'm missing, what needs to go upwards, etc.

Plus I just received confirmation that I will be vending at Florida Pagan Gathering, http://www.flapagan.org, in November! Bouncy Bouncy SQUEE! I'll finally get to use my EZ-UP canopy! I may need to rent a small trailer or suv to haul up canopy, table, plus my camping gear (tent, screen room, collapsible kitchen, picnic table, etc). I may invest in a better quality air mattress too - one of those that sits up higher. That is the one bad thing about tenting it - getting up and down off the air mattress LOL

I just need to buy some satin cording to finish it off. I'm really happy with the way the moon face turned out. I have a few more of those faces and think I'll do a few more of these in different colorways. I'm so glad I finally got the hang of the Dutch Spiral!

WIP dutch spiral

Dutch spiral is just so cool. I love the way some beaders are able to manipulate the pattern using different size beads. Plus its a fabulous way to either tie together, or inject, color into a project. This is my first time working with dutch spiral so I'm keeping it pretty simple: 39 rows with 4 main color beads, 3 rows of 6 main color beads, 3 rows of 8 main color beads, 6 rows of 10 main color beads, 3 rows of 8 main color beads, 3 rows of 6 main color beads, and finish with 39 rows of 4 main color beads. It's just a gentle increase that creates texture & visual interest. If the bead section isn't long enough for a choker or necklace I'll lengthen with satin cording.

The center focal is a moon face stitched and glued onto a Vintaj brass filigree disk. I'm going to surround the moon face with the same beads, maybe some short fringe :)

I've been a lurker on Art Junk Girl's blog for sometime and have been particularly inspired by her moleskine journal pages. I love the idea of having a 'capture device' ready for my creative urges.

I really got into the Get Things Done movement several years ago and went thru many... many, many... gadgets, widgets, programs, tools trying to be more productive. It took some time but I was able to filter down to the essence of GTD - a simple capture device that got stuff out of my head so I could 1) focus on other tasks; 2) free up mental resources; 3) retrieve when ready and/or needed.

The same idea can work for creative ideas. I now carry a small sketchbook and colored gel mini pens along with my trusty Moleskine journal. The journal is lined paper and I write everything from shopping lists to design ideas to addresses, etc. I had a bit of a wibble of the sketchbook. Tiny would be more practical in my tote bag, lighter and take up less room but I have a tendency to sketch micro-size. I get very tight, very secretive, very controlled and that constricts the creative process. I've been working to 'go big' in my sketches and other art projects, to break past boundaries, but even an 8.5x11 sketchbook would be too big to haul around every day. So I compromised with one thats roughly 5x7 and wire bound at the top reporter-style. That with some Staples-brand mini gel pens in very brilliant & vibrant colors seems to work so far :)

I have long been wishing there was something like the Craftgrrl Mafia locally. I've found inquiries from folks looking for groups but nobody seems to be organizing one. I was getting to point of thinking I would have to do it (and don't really have the time or energy). Today I hope I've lucked out and found a similiar group. The Help! section of my local paper listed several craft groups and organizations. I've emailed one that sounds cool. A collective of crafty chicks would always be a nifty resource ;)

Ups and Downs

First and foremost the Up - I no haiz bye-pho-kals! I'm so delighted the eye doc decided AGAINST giving me bifocals! He found that my eyes are basically the same rx but are straining so hard to see the tiny stuff it's taking longer to re-adjust & re-focus. Since my problem seems to be task oriented he felt that reading/task glasses will solve it - woot! He did not dilate my eyes either, double win! LOL

After the doc I went immediately to Lencrafters. I was incredibly lucky to find a spiffy pair of frames marked down plus $100 off. And they had the lenses in store. Technically I could have picked them up after 6pm but I'll get them in the morning :) Woohoo, one thing off my list :)

And the eye doc re-wrote my whole prescription so I can go back in a month and get new sunglasses.

And now for something completely different... the Down. Next week is gonna be rough work wise. A co-worker had a death in the family and will be out most of the week. I'll literally be working open to close to cover. I'll like the overtime on my check but not fully comfortable with certain tasks she handles. Plus one day I'll literally be on my own as Manager had vacation already scheduled. Ahh well :[

Enough of that....

I'd love to bury myself in beading but I'm waiting for new glasses. Plus I have headache that just won't stop. Not taking big meds cause I want to stay up for the new BattleStar Galaticta tonite LOL! Speaking of beads, once I have my task glasses I'm hoping to really bury myself in my work. I'd like to complete about 10 pieces this month, start on a big 'show stopper' piece I have in mind, and get some ideas fleshed out for a Burner buddy. My plan is to use June for embellished clothing, most likely tribal-ish bras.

Tomorrow I pick my new glasses, go to my Mom's to finish taxes (insert heart attack here), grocery store, make some ice cream, maybe cook a roast, and get my bead on :)

Good Morning! Hope everyone had a good weekend :)

Saturday I drove across the state to Tampa and included a side trip to the IBead showroom. IBead's showroom is open to the public and, I gotta say, pretty darn spiffy! They are only open until 4pm on Saturdays so I had about an hour to drool & shop LOL but trust me, I did some damage!

An incredibly neat, clean and well organized store. Plenty of staff on-hand to help out, plus I observed more staff pulling orders. Everything was clearly marked with tags and signs. Swarovski crystals, lampwork beads, and some findings are behind glass in the center of the store. Again, very helpful staff was present to pull trays & mark purchases. The incredibly pleasant woman that helped me even pulled a different color bead mat for me so I can see colors more easily. (I was looking at Volcano which pulls all sorts of colors. A change to a lighter color mat really illustrated that.) Obviously I was quite impressed with the place :)

So...more importantly... what did I buy???? I spent less than $200 and came home with some very cool stuff! I realized I didn't bring the bag with me to work but what I can remember off the top of my head: Swarovski jet hematite beads in 2 sizes; several glass pendants in odd shapes; some larger shaped pieces in hematite, jasper and lapis; several different pieces from the Vintaj line (including some scarabs that look suspiciously like roaches LOL); as well as various strands of glass beads. Ya know, I had my camera with me but did I think to lay them out on my hotel bed & take a picture? noooo LOL

It wasn't until I was checking out that it occured to me that I should have brought a copy of my tax certificate - doh! I mentioned it to the gal checking me out and she kindly suggested I fax or email it when I get home for future purchases. I will certainly do that, and keep them in mind for my next trip over. How cool would it be to send them my order and then pick up when I'm there the following Saturday? very cool indeed :)

fun peyote rings

Yesterday afternoon I finally tried out the Peyote Stackable Ring pattern from Beading Daily. Took me a bit to figure out how to continue the patterns past the first 4 beads, but I eventually saw the flow. I think these will be fun to use up leftovers! Plus would be fun to have a ring that goes with a piece :)

I also played with the spiral rope stitch from 'Creating Crystal Jewelry with Swarovski'. A few fumbles at first, of course LOL, but then pretty happy with it. I haven't really used it yet, so I don't own the stitch, but looking forward to using it in a piece.

Its funny. As excited as I am about a new project or design, I have the hardest time getting started. Its like I'm afraid to start, afraid I've bitten off too much. But then I just can't stand it anymore and jump right in :) I'm at the point with my spider piece. I bought a nifty spider button off Ebay and plan to create a larger pendant around it. I'd love to either use fine chain or lacy needle lace as the necklace part. I'll decide on that once the pendant is done.

Ok, going to procrastinate a bit more and fix dinner...then I'm beading! :)

Thankfully Island Bead had nymo available! I can finish up my experiment now :) Ok, I have to confess... I bought more than nymo LOL I also picked up a tube of S-Lon beading thread - its such pretty colors! A range of yellows, khakis, orchids, oranges & reds. Perfect for two different projects I have with both orange&yellow and orangish-red color schemes. I also bought beads for two more projects but I'm not admitting that yet LOL

I can be such an idiot sometimes! In the midst of my teeth nashing over the lack of Nymo at Joann's & Michael's, I completely forgot about a local, independantly owned bead store, Island Bead ::head desk:: I'm not even sure they are open on Sundays but they were just 5 minutes away from where I was. It wouldn't have taken anytime to swing by their store.

I'm flipping through the October 2007 Bead & Button magazine and come to the store listings in the back. My attention was caught by two stores north of me. I was busily planning a Saturday trip to Cocoa Village and then over to Cocoa Beach when my eye spied the words "Melbourne". Huh, I thought, a bead store in Melbourne? Go figure. Then I read the ad... I repeat, I can be such an idiot at times LOL

I'm headed there after work today :)

quicky camera phone pic of my latest work in progress: dichroic glass cab with 11/0 seed bead bezel in peyote stitch, surrounded by 8/0 glass beads alternating with more 11/0 seed beads, starting to add glass oval beads and bugle bead fringe; all set on the previously mentioned Stiff Stuff.

Its only a work in progress because neither Joann's or Michael's had nymo beading thread. Both places were out completely! I swear its a conspiracy LOL but I've got some on order, so ha! I'll just move on to another project that can use the rest of my white nymo thread. My creative has been unleashed so double Ha! :P

I got home a little while ago from the Micco Community Sale. I didn't sale anything but I'm counting it as a success. Why? well...
1) as suspected, it was NOT my target market LOL median age of attendees was about 68
2) my pricing was high for that market but again, see above
3) I received many compliments on my creative designs, techniques and execution.
I may not have sold anything but I'm actually feeling very energized and excited about my work. I'm going to forge ahead and look into several local craft shows & street fairs :)

Busy weekend for me - I've got about 5 designs rumbling around in my head that I'm trying to get out. Plus I have a table at the Micco Community Sale on Feb 2nd, so I'm trying to get some of the inexpensive items made.

I'm finding myself conflicted. I have these cool ideas but they are quite time-intensive. Do I spend time on my "art" or make what I think will sell? Gotta find the balance :)

Izoralee Designs will be vending officially for the first time next month! Woohoo! My mom and I will be sharing booth space at a local flea market/farmer's market. I'm busy making some spring & valentine themed pieces - pictures coming soon! The stock will do double duty as I'll also something to get up on my website.

Mom found an artist tent at a yard sale for $25!!! what a steal!! just need to get some tarps and clips for the sides. We have an 8ft table. I bought a few necklace and hand display pieces. We'll pick up a colorful tablecloth and be good to go :)

I've crossed off a few more items off my business to-do list. Two more will go away tomorrow after work when I pick up my local re-sale license and open my business account.

Frustrated and Non-Productive

Arrgghh! It's so frustrating when life gets in the way of what I enjoy!

The most creative thing I've done lately has been painting my fingernails LOL And for the record I used OPI Light My Sapphire (the exact color of grape kool-aid!) topped with OPI My Private Jet (a sparkly dark).

Too many things have happened lately to keep me from crafting and sewing. The biggest has been prepping the house for the BeeGuy. BeeGuy is coming to tear open a hole in an exterior wall and remove... you guessed it - BEES! I have honeybees making a comfy home in the hollow walls of my home. Yippee. Have I mentioned that I'm allergic to bees? and slightly phobic? LOL I've been sleeping with ear plugs so I can't hear them buzzing LOL

I decided to use the opportunity to re-paint my bedroom. When I moved in eight years ago all I did was put up textured wall paper. Now I'm ready for something else. So when I replace the drywall on Saturday, after the BeeGuy works his magic, I'll start ripping down the rest of the wall paper & border. I'll have to kilz and prime before I paint but thats not a big deal. I'm thinking a curry or paprika color, still darkish but not as dark as before.

I picked up a copy of Somerset Home this weekend and have found a few inspirational pieces. I'll wait until I've chosen a wall color before I start crafting new room accessories. One piece really jumped out at me: Butterfly Reminder, a beautiful reminder to "Create Daily". Mine will probably be a dragonfly or fairy muse, and most likely deeper jewel-tone colors but the message will certainly be as dear :)

This first one is of some elements for the Fall Choker. The big piece needs to have the long leads snipped off still. I'll probably make about 6 or 8 of the small twisted element, each will be separated by tiny orange bead, larger orange/white/green bead, and another tiny orange bead.

I'm 99% finished with this one. I still need to attach a lovely silver clasp that I bought specifically for this piece but... my hands are aching and I'm tired LOL so for Saturday night it will just get knotted securely.

I've been on a jewelry/beading binge lately. I have two more pieces in progress :)

First is a red & black asian themed choker. I'm mixing some black, carved, hexagonal beads with dark red, round, glass beads. The focal bead looks like a black mahjong tile. I worked on the actual bead layout last night. Need to pickup some sort of cap beads for the cording to finish off and attached toggle to.

The second is an fall choker of orange twisted wire and sparkly glass beads. I've never worked with wire but took advantage of the recent JoAnn's sale to pick up a 'Coiling Gizmo' and a 'WigJig'. Last night I twisted the center wire element from 16g wire. I need to find my big tool wire cutters cause my little jewelry cutters are not... well... cutting it LOL

I'd like to get both finished tonight but not sure that is feasible since I need to pack for my Tampa trip. Pics soon!

My friends have graciously allowed me to post pictures of their El-Wire costumes! I am so happy and proud of the way they turned out :) These were existing garments that I added El-Wire and its corresponding power sources. The are two challenge with El-Wire: One is that the power source is large & bulky, and has to sewn into the garment so it doesn't affect fit nor weight down the garment. Two the wire can not be bent at all, but coaxed into curves and shapes, and must be couched onto fabric. Time consuming but so totally worth it :)

New Necklace

In the course of cleaning up, and out, my craftroom I came across some beautiful dichroic glass pendants I bought several years ago. Feeling particularly energized and creative I decided to do something with them. A "necessary" trip to JoAnn's produced a chain necklace kit and some coordinating beads.

Fall SWAP Plan

Ok, so I'm back from Burning Man and I'm rearing to sew! Inspired by the FallSwap thread on Artisans Square/Stitcher's Guild I'm going to Sew With A Plan :) Not sure on the specifics yet but I do know it will include Simplicity 3804 wrap style dress, mostly likely view B with shorter sleeves (remember I'm in Florida LOL). Blouse styles will be the flattering seams of McCall's M5145 (I love menswear fabrics and similar styled blouses from Lane Bryant but need to tweek the fit) and easy comfy tshirts from Simplicity 4076 (several nice variations for a cleavage girl like me LOL). I have a Tried-N-True skirt pattern, and a pants pattern that I want to tweek the fit on so it will be a TNT. I'm going to try and stay focused on work clothing. Right now I wear shorts, jeans, tshirts & blouses. Comfortable but I'd like to pull myself a bit more together without being totally 'career dressing' which is not quite appropriate in this particular instance.

Now I just have to refrain from buying fabric until I've gotten a workable plan together AND gone thru my stash at home LOL I have two fabrics I'm soooo jonsing for at GorgeousThings.com but trying to be good until I'm better prepared :)

Woot! Some Finished Pieces!

I actually finished a couple of pieces this weekend! I'm so thrilled with myself! They are a bit slapdash but these are pieces that are headed out to BurningMan so details are not a concern :)

The two pieces completed are the wrap dress and wrap-around pants. Seaming and finishing on both are simply serged - no hems, no topstiching, no facings, no bindings.

I had to add about 1 inch to the wrap dress skirt to get the fit I wanted. That was a simple split down the pattern center. I'm glad I traced it out onto tracing paper! I can now go back and retrace with the adjustment. The wrap dress is rather sheer but its geared for bare coverage and minimum added heat LOL

The wrap-around pants were easy-peasy! I added about an inch all around the edges but once made up it wasn't necessary, the fit & coverage would have been fine without it. Maybe 2 hours cut out & construction time. Again, I merely serged the seams and all around the raw edges. This pair I made up in some light brown crinkle gauze. I plan on knocking out a second pair but these will be a bit more labor intensive. The second pair will be from black crochet-like lace fabric. The front wrap is just lace while the back fabric is similar lace but has small sequins scattered thru out. I thought it would be a cool subtle but sparkly item for night wear on the playa :)

I'm 99.9% finished with Cherie's costume too :) I am having issues with where to tuck the power pack for the el-wire around the neckline. This is a design flaw I didn't take into consideration :( However, its fixable with an extention wire so I can drop the power cord down along side the zipper (on the inside of course) and make a "power pocket" to hold battery & pack on the skirt where it flairs out. I'm holding off ordering until I get further along with Chris' costume in case I've made the same error in design. I hope to have both done by the end of the week so I can ship it out to them. They are finally in one place for a few days LOL

Ethnic Patterns

I just ordered some patterns from EthicPatterns.com. I finally resolved in my mind to simply finish Cherie & Chris' el-wire pieces, and to make up at least one each of these new patterns. This, with my existing tribal pieces should get me thru BurningMan.

I purchased the Moroccan (Magic) Sun Dress, the short Wrap Dress, and funky wrap Island Pants.

My mom used to make a version of these pants back in the late 60's-early 70's in beautiful luxury fabrics as "hostess" or "lounging" pants. The Wrap Dress will be made up from some existing fabric in my stash, probably a batik or faux tye dye. The Pants and Moroccan Dress might be made up from some cool sari materials I have. The saris are light, airy, with good drape. I think I have at least one paper silk in the stash. Hmmm I might make up all three patterns from my saris. I've been holding onto the fabrics for over a year, this might be their time to shine :)

Latest Skirt

I've been totally inspired by Diaryofasewingfanatic to start sewing some cool summer skirts for work. I found these cute fabric during my last Joann's raid:

I'm using New Look 6496: I made up the striped fabric into D (mid-length with gores). In retrospect, since this was the heavier of the two fabrics, almost a lightweight denim, it might have been better as the shorter non-flared version.

Since I'm quite curvy, I had to add some to the hip and remove some from the waist. The directions called for simply turning the waist down and stitching but I varied from that. I still felt like the upper edge was too loose after my fitting. I remembered an article years ago in Threads Magazine about Chanel suits. Evidently she added elastic to the waistband to even fitted skirts, it was just enough to give that custom fit. Taking that as my inspiration, I sewed down some thin lingerie to the top edge before I turned it down & stitched. It doesn't really gather it but just makes it fit a tad better.

Tonight I'm cutting out the blue print. I'm hoping I have something I can use as the lining LOL I think I have some beige lingerie knit that I might use. Plus some el-wire came in yesterday - woot! Can't wait to start putting it on the wedding dress and mardi-gras costume. The costumes are for a couple of friends for BurningMan this year.
